Our Norway Northern Lights Photography Tour and Whale Watching Excursion spans seven days, with  some periods giving you time to explore the island’s sites and culture.

On nights with good conditions for Aurora borealis, you will head out to some remote locations. These secluded places are handpicked by the Photographer Team, and you will go out to sea some of the times. Your educated skippers will teach you about the whales while out on safaris. The team use large stable boats with the open one been a RIB Unlimited 37 foot with a top speed of 50 knots. Also, they use a Princess 50 for a more comfortable experience.

The Norway Northern Lights Photography Tour is centered on (or around) the beautiful, idyllic island of Senja, referred to as “the fairytale island of Senja.” This is Norway’s second largest island.

On the Norway Northern Lights Photography Tour of Senja, you can indulge the mountains, the seas, the beaches, and the fishing villages with help from your guide. Nature and dramatic landscape abounds in Senja. The fairy-tale island is noted for its seasonal phenomenon that are the Midnight Sun and Northern Lights. The Polar Night and Arctic light are indeed spectacular here too. From mountain peaks to coast, Senja offer boundless nature. Travelers who book the Norway Northern Lights Photography Tour are also keen on enjoying many facets of the island’s nature attractions. If you are into hiking, you may want to try out the trails of Ånderdalen National Park.

Mefjord Brygge, Mefjordvær, is the hotel where you will most likely be staying during your Norway Northern Lights Photography Tour and Whale Watching Excursion. Here, you will be so close to the sea, literally your balcony is the dock, which means that you are just meters from the ocean.

Tour’s Program

You are welcomed by your driver at the Bardufoss Airport (BDU), Bardufoss in Målselv, Norway. And transferred to Senja Island to the Hotel Mefjord Brygge. MEFJORD BRYGGE
  • Arriving at the Hotel and Apartments Mefjord Brygge, you will check in and sight-see the surrounding areas. [Here, you are only a few footsteps away from the water. And this locale is the starting point for your daily excursions]
  • Each chalet has 5 bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large kitchen. So up to 8 persons live in the same chalet but every private room has a unique lock.
"Norway Northern Lights Photography Tour and Whale Watching Excursion" is focused on these activities and unlike the rest of the tours offered by L' EcoResorts, every day is virtually a repeat in terms of the itinerary. That is, you will go out in the boat or by road or hiking for observing/photographing the Northern Lights, the Landscape, the whales.

Depending on the weather situation, you depart to the sea in the morning hours to observe and photograph the orcas and humpback whales. A real highlight is snorkeling with orcas and humpback whales.

Snorkeling equipment and snorkeling suits are not provided and have to be brought from home.

At this locale, a movie was made, recently, together with BBC for the production Blue Planet Ocean. Feeding orcas in schools, among other sea creatures were filmed. It turned out that the visibility range are surprisingly good here.

If the sea is too stormy you will search for birds, elks and reindeer by car. Of course, you will stops for landscape photography along the way.

Our photographer is always around to talk with. As well, some late afternoons, we do photo courses, which you can partake in.

Weather conditions in the Arctic can be difficult to predict at the best of times. We can therefore not guarantee the main plan, but there will always be amazing sights and other things to do.

Clothes and Climate

We can face temperatures until minus 30 Celsius! Therefore you need thermo clothes:

  • Good winter boots are critical. Make sure they do not fit tight. They should have a substantial base depth to them since you are often standing on cold ground in one place for long periods. We recommend Lemigo Arctic Thermo, Lemigo Vermont 887 Boots or similar waterproof boots.
  • First layer clothing: This is important! Do NOT wear cotton as the first layer against your skin. Use wool, and we strongly recommend Brynje. https://www.brynje.no/produkter/arctic/arctic-zip-polo-shirt-w-thumbfingergrip
  • A warm parka:The conventional wisdom of “layering” is not so true when you are just standing around in cold temperatures. Layering is great if your heat output varies frequently as when climbing and hiking. But loft and air are what really insulate against the cold, so a puffy down parka will do the job great with a sweater underneath. example: Fjellräven Arctic Parca
  • Glove liners that can fit inside larger warmer mittens work well. Small chemically activated hand warmers are a big help. You can put them either in the pockets of your down parka, or in the mittens themselves. thermopad.de
Depending on your scheduled time of departure, you may have time to capture more images from your hotel deck facing the ocean, mountains.

You will be transported to the airport for your return flight home.

Norway has four diverse seasons, these are spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
  • April through to May is spring. During this period, winter is gone and the snow have melted off of the lower grounds. Some highlands and mountaintops may have some snow remains. The landscape is dotted with springtime flowers. Wind gust is usually high. Summer is on its way with longer days and shorter nights.
  • June through to mid-August. Days are sunny, warm, and longer. Schools are on a 2-months break, and the local are out enjoying the beach, indulging the outdoors. Since the sun does not set below the horizon in the far north, nighttime is still daylight.
  • Mid-August, autumn begins. Norwegians like to traverse the outdoors and do so during autumn by climbing in the hills and mountains, picking wild berries and mushrooms. The temperature slowly begins to dip during September and as autumn progresses, darker days are longer with the afternoons and evenings become dark. During daylight, the northern areas of the country depict that non-sunny, soft light during October through to November. Then came the snow and the bright white landscape.
  • It is said that there are two winters in Norway: Winter 1-The Dark Time and Winter 2-The White Winter. October through to early January is winter. White winter maximizes after Christmas with more snow falls, which transforms much of Norway’s landscape into a winter wonderland! Skiers, cross-country trekkers, and tobogganers are out in full force. During winters in Norway, the temperatures can dip to below -30˚C in some parts of the country. The snowfall often extends until Easter, when it is springtime again!
Whale watching has became one of the main reasons tourists visit Senja island in winter. Usually from around December until February we have big populations of killer whales and humpback whales coming to Mefjord to feed. They are attracted with lots of herring that stays in Mefjord over the winter.

The activity package will let you experience Northern Lights, observe humpback and killer whales, and be close to untouched Norwegian nature and marine landscape.
