Lake Tanganyika and Greystoke Mahale Mountains National Park formed two contrasting worlds here.
The Mahale Mountains National Park is home to some of the last remaining and endangered wild chimpanzees in Africa. It is a protected site, comprises an area of 1 613 km² and located about 128 km south of Kigoma town on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika.
The terrain surrounding the Tanzania Eco Lodge is hilly and rugged and is made up primarily of the Mahale Mountain series that stretch from the northwest to the southeast across the park. The highest peak (Mount Nkungwe) rises to 2 462 m above sea level.
Spanning the four countries of Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Zambia, Lake Tanganyika is the second deepest lake in the world, following Lake Baikal. It is 673 kilometers (418 miles) long, making the lake the world’s longest. Lake Tanganyika and its ecosystem serve as important bioreserve to a diversified array of plants and animals. The estimated number of wildlife species here is in excess of 2,000, of which 600 are endemic to the region.
The Tanzania Eco Lodge has six large bandas (or cottages) that are unique and spread over double storey. Travelers staying at the Tanzania Eco Lodge can enjoy the thatched banda communal place directly on the beach – dining often takes place on the beach and under the starry skies.
Both the Tanzania Eco Lodge and its sister lodge Chada Camp in Katavi can be rented jointly. The region where the two lodges are located are preserved and isolated, hence less visited by tourists. Safari experience is extremely rewarding here and is centered around trekking the mountains to see chimps and jeep safaris to see Cape buffalo and elephant in their natural habitat.
We adhere to a carefully crafted model of luxury experiential ecotourism, anchoring all of our African and Asian safaris and tours with our unique conservation philosophy of Care of the Land, Care of the Wildlife and Care of the People.
You can therefore rest assured that &Beyond offers African and Asian tours and safaris with a core focus on conservation - helping you enjoy all that these holiday destinations have to offer, while at the same time having as little impact on the natural surroundings as possible.
In essence, going on a safari holiday with &Beyond, means that you are able to directly contribute towards the land and wildlife conservation of our 9 million hectare footprint throughout Africa and South Asia. After travelling on safari or tour with us, you will come to appreciate that as the lucky
custodians of these beautiful destinations, it is therefore our responsibility to conserve their delicate eco-systems and respect the wild animals they’re home to, as well as educate surrounding communities on how to continue caring for them.
At each of our luxury lodges and safari destinations, we’ve invested in extensive training to produce expert safari guides and naturalists who are able to give you a deep understanding of each game reserve’s unique qualities and potential future challenges.
We tread lightly, build green safari lodges where possible, apply eco-sensitivity in all that we do and support the groundbreaking Rhinos Without Borders initiative. By doing all of this, we genuinely believe that we can help protect Africa and Asia’s threatened ecosystems, endangered species and their precious diversity of wildlife areas.
Our guests play a crucial part in helping us realise our vision. By travelling with us, our guests enable us to make many small but meaningful differences to the world that surrounds us. Whether it is coming face to face with a previously endangered rhino, shaking the proud hand of a local elder whose once destitute community now has a future or simply witnessing the sun rising once more over lands that have been restored to their natural splendour, our guests cannot fail to be touched by the contribution that they are making to &Beyond's work in Africa's wide open spaces.
Today, &Beyond provides direct employment for nearly 2 000 people, in some cases boosting the employment level on the land by 1 000%.
In some cases in Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa, &Beyond's landlords are the traditional communities and this is the model we seek to expand to global territories with the help of grant-funders and governments seeking a new model of sustainable rural development.
We recognise that our most valuable asset is our staff. With this in mind, in 2003 &Beyond initiated a Positive Health programme across the group, spearheaded by positive health trainers David Patient and Neil Orr. David Patient is the longest documented HIV-positive survivor in the world, more than 20 years and counting. Neil Orr has a Masters degree in Research Psychology in the area of psychoneuroimmunology (the mind/body effect - the role that attitude plays in maintaining health).
Together they have created a dynamic training course built around natural vitamins and minerals, affordable foodstuffs and the power of positive thinking. It is geared both at preventive health care and at improving the health of people living with chronic disease.
Through this Positive Health training we motivate and empower our staff and neighbouring communities to take positive action in dealing with all current health challenges - not only restricted to HIV/AIDS.
To date, &Beyond's Positive Health programme has reached over 30,000 individuals amongst staff and rural communities. The programme was voted one of three finalists in the 2005 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards in the Investor in People category.
