Our Nicaragua Eco Resort depicts barefoot luxury in its purest form.

Located on a 4,000 acre expanse of Nicaraguan jungle, nearly half of the property at the Nicaragua Eco Resort is a private protected reserve. The remainder of this breathtaking property is set aside for low-impact agriculture (which provides our restaurant with freshest produce, meat, and dairy) and our award-winning accommodations.

Fifteen exquisite bungalows await, constructed of natural materials and tucked gracefully into the lush jungle. A short walk away, our friendly restaurant staff serves up authentic and delicious local specialties as well as other international fare always using the freshest ingredients. Beyond the open air dining room and veranda, the serenity of the pool at the Nicaragua Eco Resort is yours to enjoy as well as a mile long stretch of sandy beach where you’ll undoubtedly be spending plenty of time. Gorgeous views abound here and from nearly every spot at the Nicaragua Eco Resort.

At the Nicaragua Eco Resort, we encourage you to take the time, whether on your private terrace, the beach or from the restaurant to admire the fiery sunsets and starry nights that punctuate each day. Come join us in beautiful Nicaragua to experience the wilds of nature, seaside serenity, cultural connections, exciting excursions and time spent in barefoot luxury that you’ll never forget!

Whatever your preferences are – whether you’re interested in yoga, fine dining, getting to know the locals, volunteer work, nature hikes, horseback riding, surfing, massage, yoga, fishing, or just relaxing in a beautiful place far from home (or all of the above!), we’re here at the Nicaragua Eco Resort to offer you an unforgettable experience. We hope, like many of our guests that once you’ve stayed with us you’ll return again and again.

The Nicaragua Eco Resort has been recommended by Conde Nast Traveller, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, and MSNBC to name a few. We’ve received numerous awards including the 2011 Mexico and Central America Leading Green Hotel and the 2009 Trip Advisor Travelers’ Choice Award. We think the accolades are well deserved, but don’t just take our word for it – come see for yourself!

Nearly half of the 4,000 acre property is a government designated nature reserve (Reserva Silvestre El Aguacate). Through reforestation, tree planting, environmental awareness and education, at the Nicaragua Eco Resort, we help defend this important natural area against poaching, illegal logging and deforestation.

Thanks to the planting of hundreds of thousands of trees and an ongoing vigilance to keep poachers off of the land wildlife has increased all over the property since the lodge opened in 2004. This protected area represents one of the last large sanctuaries, critical to the conservation of regional wildlife habitat along Central America's Pacific coast. Sustainability has been key in the construction and design of the lodge from the very beginning; our Nicaragua Eco Resort used local artisans and artwork inspired by indigenous cultures in its interior design, and sustainably sourced wood for furniture and infrastructure.

Sustainable Design at the Nicaragua Eco Resort

  • The structures at the Nicaragua Eco Resort were constructed with minimal impact on the surrounding environment and respect for local indigenous communities.
  • All buildings accommodate slopes and trees.
  • Minimal earth movement and cutting of trees was done.
  • The lodge's 15 luxury bungalows were built and furnished by Simplemente Madera, an international sustainable wood products and furniture company based in Managua. Wood used in Simplemente Madera's furniture is certified by SmartWood and pieces are marked with a label stating the source of the wood, species, and date manufactured.
  • The lodge interior features unique designs using sustainably sourced hardwoods from the property itself.
  • The color and traditions of local indigenous cultures inspire the décor.
  • Pathways leading to the hanging bridge and to the beach were made of wood damaged or split during the construction of the main lodge.
  • Solar panels are used to heat the bath water.
  • Use of a centralized system for gray and black water with a bio filter system. Treated water is used for irrigation.
  • The entire lodge was designed in communion with nature. It was "carefully built to minimally impact the surrounding nature, creating a unique architectural blend of tropical comfort."

Since the owners purchased the land in 1998, 1.5 million trees (fruit, teak, and other sustainable forestry trees) have been planted on the property. These will be harvested in the next 10-20 years, and new trees will be planted in their place. This method of "tree farming" represents an alternative to traditional or illegal logging, which threatens Nicaragua's precious forests. The benefits reaped by this sustainable forestry program will last for many decades to come.

On the premises there is an organic working farm, providing approximately 60% of the basic food used by the lodge. There is also an organic shrimp farm providing fresh, sustainably farmed seafood. The lodge often gets fresh seafood from local fishermen who reap their catch using traditional fishing methods in nearby waters. Sustainability initiatives such as these help the lodge remain relatively self-sufficient and allow us to operate with minimal negative impact on the surrounding environment.

A key part of the Nicaragua Eco Resort sustainability efforts is its involvement with the local community. Nearly all the employees are from the local area. We support the community by buying products from local vendors and farmers.

Fresh seafood is acquired from local fishermen who practice traditional fishing methods. We also feature locally handmade artwork in the lodge and around the property. You may notice a beautiful ceramic pot near the pool or artwork inspired by the indigenous people of Nicaragua in your bungalow. Our pottery collection, dispersed throughout the lodge, features pieces hand-crafted by artisans in San Juan de Oriente, a village steeped in the tradition of pottery making. The art form is a vital source of sustainable income for the artisans and their family and we are happy to support it.

Want to meet some locals and learn first-hand about the Nicaraguan lifestyle? Great! We hoped so. It’s an easy visit to the town of San Juan del Oriente, where colorful clay pottery and handicrafts adorn the sidewalk. Visitors can meet the artisans, watch them at work, and buy some gorgeous souvenirs to take home – all while supporting this community and their longstanding artistic heritage.

We can also arrange a tour of other towns, such as those where we support regional schools through funding, teacher training, and donations from both the lodge and guests.

This work is heartfelt. We believe deeply in the power of equipping Nicaraguan schoolchildren with the education and technical tools needed to propel themselves forward – that the result will be long term preservation of heritage, protection of natural resources, and an empowered, healthy, vibrant generation of young people.

Together with the NicaFrance Foundation we provide workshops and activities to strengthen the process of teaching and learning. Our programs aim to instill children with a positive attitude of change, creativity and desire to attain their goals. Donations (often from hotel guests) have included backpacks filled with school supplies, school uniforms, equipment, and nutritious foods. We also contribute to school maintenance. Local schoolteachers have been thoroughly trained (with the help of an education specialist) and equipped with teaching strategies and technical tools. Thus, through their work they can improve education for local schoolchildren, paving the way for a better future.

A visit to the coffee plantation, La Complida - in the central highlands of Matagalpa, can be arranged!

Community involvement is key to the sustainability efforts of the Nicaragua Eco Resort. Community building initiatives include:

  • Employing local people as 95% of the workforce, including senior management positions.
  • Working closely with local indigenous populations.
  • Employing local people as guides in nature hikes, fishing trips, visits to schools, and other excursions.
  • Sourcing fresh seafood from local fishermen.
  • Providing significant support to 6 regional schools in the rural communities of Las Marías, El Bastón, San Antonio, Papaturro, Bernardino y la Talanguera - empowering Nicaraguan youth and strengthening communities through education.
  • Providing income for local artisans by promoting their crafts and pottery at the lodge.
  • Supporting a nearby coffee farm, La Cumplida, which produces Rainforest Alliance certified coffee - the resort supports the plantation and its farmers by organizing excursions (via private plane!) to the property.
