This New Zealand Resort comprises a main lodge and treehouse accommodations. The resort is owned, operated and constructed by a family of architects and builders.

A contemporary country retreat, the New Zealand Resort depicts handcrafted designs hewed from local and sustainable woods. The majority of the furniture throughout the lodge, including the custom designed beds that some guests say are, “the most comfortable beds in the South Island” are handcrafted.

In 2003, the New Zealand Resort was established with six guest rooms in the main lodge and the Olive House. In 2006, five luxury tree houses were added. In 2009, the main lodge was refurbished, converting the six rooms into four – two Suites, one Lodge Room, and the Hapuku Room – and also a lap-pool and sauna were later added.
Hapuku Lodge Suites

At the New Zealand Resort, there are four rooms in the Main Lodge: two Suites, the Hapuku Room (overlooking the pool), and the Lodge Room. Each room has spectacular views of the Kaikoura Mountain Range.

Olive House Apartment

The Olive House Suite is a spacious apartment with a kitchen, fireplace, open-plan bathroom with a spa tub and rain fountain shower, and a 360-degree view of our olive grove, the Pacific coastline, and the Kaikoura Mountain Range.

Tree Houses

Nested 30 feet (10 M) above the ground in the canopy of a native Manuka grove, each tree house has spectacular views of Kaikoura’s dramatic mountains and the Pacific coastline.

At the heart of the resort experience is a passion for good food and wine. At the New Zealand Resort, produce is sourced from the property’s own herb and vegetable gardens, free range chickens, as well as local market gardens, fisherman and hunters. Wild game is a regular feature on the menu along with crayfish (rock lobster) and other locally sourced seafood.

At the New Zealand Resort, we recognise that guests to our resort may travel great distances to experience the spectacular scenery and maritime activities of Kaikoura. Our aim is to nurture this unique environment, restoring it through planting native trees, re-introducing native birds, and being sustainable in our operations.

In 2002 Kaikoura, as a township, was the first local authority in the world to become a Green Globe certified community. In addition, nearly every local operator has a green mission threaded through their operations, caring for the environment which brings tourists from all over the world.

We share the travellers appreciation for the environment, and continue to make refinements to our day-to-day operations and are proud of our efforts to enhance the local environment by planting native trees, encouraging bird populations with plant varieties that support them year-round.

In our efforts towards making New Zealand tourism sustainable, we have committed to planting at least one New Zealand native plant for every guest night spent at the Lodge. As of December 2009, we have planted over 11,500 NZ native plants and trees. By planting, we create a long-term carbon sink offsetting a proportion of carbon produced by travel and our operations. Just as important, we help replenish the local vegetation and thereby support the native bird populations, which include rare and endangered species.

Beyond tree planting, our eco-efforts include:

  • When dining at our lodge, you can be confident that we are sourcing over 75% of our ingredients and products from local farmers and purveyors with whom we often have a direct relationship, tracing meat and vegetables to the farm gate. Organic ingredients are preferred. Most everything on the plate is sourced locally, and our wine list also features only New Zealand wines.
  • The kitchen garden, managed by our chef, is completely organic, growing seasonal vegetables and herbs on site and reducing carbon miles associated with transporting produce.
  • Our aim is to reduce, recycle and compost. Along with Kaikoura's continually improving facilities, and goal of becoming a zero-waste community, this process will continue to improve. We currently compost all kitchen waste including waste meat and proteins.
  • Timber used in construction and interiors are responsibly sourced, and although we include some imported timber these are mainly recycled and salvaged timbers.
  • Our resort tree houses has small private fireplaces, at the time of installation these enclosed fireplaces were some of the most efficient fireplaces in the world.
  • All rooms have significant insulation; HR1 grade insulation and double glazing.

For guests interested in enjoying a selection of Kaikoura’s greener activities, while minimizing your environmental impact and personally contributing to the local environment ,please see our eco-package below, or consider our recommended activities or seasonal packages.

Our recommended Eco-Package includes:

  • Two nights in a One Bedroom Tree House, surrounded by the canopy of our native Manuka grove.
  • A Discover Kaikoura’s Maori Culture and Bush Restoration Tour, allowing you to learn about Kaikoura’s rich Maori culture and join a Maori tree planting ceremony, and play a part in restoring the native eco-system.
  • A Night Sky Tour; introducing guests to New Zealand's spectacular star-filled sky. Remarkably, Kaikoura has 80% more stars than the sky of the northern hemisphere.
  • A nightly dinner for two, created from local ingredients, wholesome and organic produce.
  • Optionally you may chose to contribute to Trees for Travellers, a local initiative planting trees and creating new areas of native bush which can then be monitored throughout their lifetime.

As pragmatic greenies invested in the restoration of New Zealand’s native bush, we are fortunate to live in Kaikoura, a community internationally recognized for its environmental efforts.

People come to Kaikoura for its marine life and scenery – it seems only natural to protect it.

We are a family of Kiwis who moved to California some years ago. We feel fortunate to now split our time between the States and New Zealand. Originally, we came to Kaikoura for its farming environment and to be near the famed surf of Mangamaunu. As Kaikoura’s eco-marine tourism grew, our labors here evolved. A family full of architects and builders, the idea of creating a contemporary country inn was expanded by the process into Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses. We continue to learn what’s involved in the process.
