Mafia Island Eco Resort Tanzania

Silence – Environment – Slowness

Switching off the engine and sailing, no music at the restaurant, the gentle sound of wind and waves. The Mafia Island Eco Resort Tanzania “different time” is governed by natural elements, including the moon, the tides, the sun, the seasons. Adjusting to a different rhythm that is dictated entirely by nature …

Discard the pre-conceived notions of your typical beach holiday, and open yourself to something completely different… the Mafia Island Eco Resort Tanzania is seamlessly integrated with its surrounding environment – cultural as well as natural. There is no distinction between the hotel and its surrounds…

At the Mafia Island Eco Resort Tanzania, seven bungalow suites, perfectly blended with the surrounding tropical garden, overlook the infinite hues of blue of Chole Bay, the core of Mafia Island Marine Park, Tanzania.

The Mafia Island Eco Resort Tanzania, considered one of the most exclusive eco-resorts in the world, is renowned for its great cuisine, unpretentious and laid-back atmosphere, and warm but discrete hospitality. Balancing luxury with respect for local culture and environment, it is the perfect place to relax after a safari, and the ideal base for exploring the underwater wonders of Mafia Island. With a touch of style.

The name Mafia is probably derived from the Arabic “morfiyeh”, meaning “group” or “archipelago”, or from the Swahili “mahali pa afya” meaning “a healthy dwelling place”. Its history goes back to the 8th century where it played a key role in the East African trading routes between Kilwa and Zanzibar.

Mafia Island has so far escaped the invasion of mass tourism as building has been restricted to few tourist lodges. The lodges are like “bush resorts” or “eco-lodges” in that everything is quiet, thus offering the perfect alternative safari experience. Major tourist activities are scuba diving, snorkelling, beach and offshore island excursions.

The places to visit near the Mafia Island Eco Resort Tanzania are Chole Bay, the Lighthouse, Kua ruins, Kinasi Pass Islets, Mange reef, Kitutia, Jibondo Pass, Ras Kisimani.

Diving safaris around Chole Bay, within Mafia Island’s Marine Park are outstanding.

The Mafia Island Eco Resort Tanzania aims to exist in total harmony with its natural environment, and tries to achieve this through various initiatives.

In terms of food, as much produce as possible is sourced from local island traders, and all seafood is bought from fishermen who have been approved by the Marine Park authorities. This ensures that fish are sourced sustainably, taken only from certain areas of the park using traditional fishing methods. Mafia Island is an important habitat for endangered species and has high levels of bio-diversity – the lodge helps to conserve and protect the island and all of its inhabitants.

The lodge manages to minimise its impact thanks to a special process of treating wastewater to prevent environmental pollution, the impressively named Phyto-purification system: waste water is pumped away to a main septic sewage system and then filtered underground through a phyto-depuration bamboo pool near bye. The process is so effective that at the end, the purified water can even be used for gardening. The process is completely pollution free.

An eco-friendly resort, the hotel operates in a manner that is both environmentally and socially responsible.

Everything at the lodge has been constructed using local materials including coconut wood, palm trees and makuti (a thatching material), with local craftsmen employed to use traditional methods of building. Indeed, all of the lodge’s staff are inhabitants of the island with many of them living in the neighbouring village of Utende. The lodge’s management prefer to invest in their community and ensure its sustainability by training up local people. The lodge is also keen to protect local cultures, and this include using traditional and eco-friendly Arabic dhows for water transport rather than fuel-guzzling boats.
