The Certificate for Sustainable Tourism is a globally recognized program sponsored by the Costa Rica Tourism Board that seeks to categorize and certify tourism companies on a scale from one to five leaves according to the degree to which its operations contribute to a model of sustainability (five being the most sustainable). Its main purpose is to improve the way in which the natural and social resources are managed, to motivate the active participation of the local communities, and to support the competitiveness of the business sector.
As the phenomenon of “green washing” becomes more prevalent, more and more discerning travelers are turning to certification programs like Certificate for Sustainable Tourism to be able to recognize hotels that are truly committed to contributing to the social and natural well-being of the communities where they operate. Certificate for Sustainable Tourism, being one of the oldest, most rigorous and comprehensive sustainability certifications in the world, has gained more and more support worldwide.
The Certificate for Sustainable Tourism, regarded as the strictest and most demanding program in the world for verifying the sustainability of hotels, eco resorts and tour operators, awards from one to five “green leaves” to those entities which participate in the program. As of the end of 2012, there are approximately 212 hotels and 65 tour operators which are certified by the Certificate for Sustainable Tourism, including our Limón Eco Lodge Costa Rica.
The resort also holds the highest 5 LEAVES certification from: Certification for Sustainable Tourism in Costa Rica. In the country there are only 35 hotels qualified with this certification. This is a product of the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT).
The Certification for Sustainable Tourism was designed to differentiate businesses of the tourism sector, which comply with a sustainable model of natural, cultural and social resource management.
We have developed our houses with a mind set focused on preventing impact to the environment as well as integration with it.
Perhaps one of the most important features of our houses is the integration with the environment, including to name a few:
As an example, the the houses at Limón Eco Lodge Costa Rica has been entirely built of sustainable woods. All the hard woods used on the structures were obtained out of fallen trees. We did not cut any alive tree to construct the buildings.
Some of the associations that are the Limón Eco Lodge Costa Rica plays an active participation and or board member ship with are: Arechipu (our local association in charge of the beach surveillance program), Colac, (this organization is a local committee and Governmental organization to achieve better standard of living in the community and legal support), Adecomaga (local development Association which comes up for the interests of the members within the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife refuge). Adela (Association against petrol activity on the Southern Caribbean coast). Cooperativa Talamanca Sostenible (cooperation supporting alternative energy alternatives in Talamanca).
