OUR JAVA ISLAND RESORT OVERLOOKS THE BOROBUDUR (A 9th –CENTURY BUDDIST TEMPLE), A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. THE RESORT SETTING INCLUDES A NATURAL AMPHITHEATER OF LUSH PALMS AND RICE FIELDS. FURTHER, THE JAVA ISLAND RESORT IS A SPIRITUAL SANCTUARY INFLUENCED BY ANCIENT AND PRESENT DAY JAVA.

Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist monument, is a short drive from the Java Island Resort, one of many religious sites in the area. Time-weathered Hindu temples on the Dieng Plateau date from the 7th and 8th centuries, and at the ancient complex of Prambanan, towering Hindu temples are dotted across the plain. Java’s dramatic landscape is ideal for trekking, whether up the steep flanks of Mount Merapi or into the lush Menoreh Hills, home to idyllic villages, clove plantations and rice fields. Rural villages host frequent celebrations with gamelan music and spirited dancing, while Hindu and Buddhist temples contain centuries of architectural and sculptural masterpieces.

ACCOMMODATION AT THE JAVA ISLAND RESORT

Backed by the Menoreh Hills and lapped by verdant rice terraces, our Java Island Resort spacious Suites draw their serenity from Borobudur’s ancient presence in the valley below. Timeless and serene with details inspired by the 9th-century Buddhist sanctuary of Borobudur, the Suites centre around a four-pillar king-size bed on a raised terrazzo platform. Beyond lie spacious garden terraces, some with private swimming pools, and all with lounging pavilions. Views are of terraced farmland and the Menoreh Hills, or the valley and Borobodur itself.

JAVA ISLAND RESORT’S MENU. SIMPLY COOKED, MARKET-FRESH FISH IS OFTEN FEATURED IN THE MAKAN MALAM MENU ALONGSIDE JAVANESE RECIPES.

The region’s diverse vegetables, fruits and spices are not only integral to the cuisine but also to cocktails, such as the soursop martinis that pair wonderfully with the sunset panoramas across the valley.

The hypnotic sounds of the gamelan resonate through the colonnaded restaurant at meals, complemented by views over rice fields to Borobudur and the dramatic, volcano-fringed landscape. The resort’s own garden and nearby farms supply most of the ingredients used by the chef in creating a range of Javanese and Indonesian specialities, including a daily changing Makan Malam degustation dinner menu.

WELLNESS

The spa at the Java Island Resort with its outdoor relaxation bale is home to treatments informed by Javanese healing and beauty rituals that have been handed down through the generations. Tennis courts overlook the Menoreh Hills, while yoga is practiced both at the gym or outdoors. The 40-metre swimming pool, surrounded by loungers and umbrellas, offers peaceful respite amid rice paddies and banyan trees.

The Java Island Resort embraces everything that Java offers. Named Amanjiwo (Peaceful Soul), it is truly a soulful resort and blends well into the natural environment in which it operates. Wildlife and plant species are highly regarded by the resort operators.

The locality of the resort is a part of Indonesia that is filled with centuries-old temples and forests, creating an authentic sense of place that remain virtually pristine and authentic.

The Borobudur Elephant Art Foundation was founded by the operator of the Java Island Resort along with Asian Elephant Art Conservation Project personnel. The objective of the project is to help and support Sumatran elephants.

Elephant Sela is the star among the group elephants. She has her own open space studio close to the west side of Borobudur. She uses her trunk to hold the brush and paint. Sela is a creative wildlife artist!

Guests at the resort are usually rewarded with a painting by the elephant with a certificate, and funds generated through tourism go to conservation efforts, benefiting both the elephants and community.
