THE BRAZIL ECO LODGE EXPERIENCE

AT THE BRAZIL ECO LODGE, WE ARE COMMITTED TO HELPING VISITORS ENJOY A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE IN THE AMAZON RAINFOREST. WE WELCOME TRAVELERS TO COME STAY WITH US AND LEARN ABOUT THIS MASSIVE ECOSYSTEM AND ITS IMPORTANCE.

The Brazil Eco Lodge philosophy of hospitality starts with the choice of modern architecture that uses space in harmony with nature, creating an atmosphere of comfort, sophistication and well-being. For 24-hours a day, we take great care over the minimal details, from the welcome upon arrival to lovely candlelight dinners, the bar service, the open fire, all the activities in the forest, and in the well-kept gardens.

The guides are all nature lovers who enjoy sharing their knowledge and respect for the Amazon. We feel that a happy and positive experience with us tends to deepen people’s connection with nature.

IN OUR VIEW, FACILITATING CONTACT WITH NATURE HELPS TO CREATE LUXURY OUT OF THE ESSENTIAL.

Our Brazil Eco Lodge provides a touch that sharpens the senses to appreciation of the simple and beautiful things in life, which are manifest here in all their splendor, from the seemingly endless forest stretching away into the distance to the star-filled night sky, the soothing sound of the river, the quiet of the middle of the night, the Amazon rain and the jungle scents. And this feeling of well-being can also be enjoyed in the comfort of the bungalows, where the accommodation ensures a cozy night’s rest and makes use of sustainable practices such as a natural ventilation system, solar water heating and the treatment of biological waste.

In addition to responsible tourism, the Brazil Eco Lodge plays an important role in environmental conservation, through the Cristalino Private National Heritage Reserve (RPPN), as well as performing a valuable social function through various activities in the region devoted to education, research and conservation, organized and run through the Cristalino Foundation. This is all part of who we are, continually thinking about how to bring you and nature closer together.

MINIMUM IMPACT TOURISM

TOURISTS WHO VISIT OUR BRAZIL ECO LODGE ARE HELPING IN IMPORTANT RESPONSIBLE TOURISM INITIATIVES.

  • Recycling and separation of inorganic waste (aluminum, plastic, metal and paper).
  • Heating water using solar energy.
  • Treatment of grey effluent - from the sink and shower - through a permaculture system.
  • Treatment of black effluent - from the toilet - using layers of filters and an evapotranspiration basin.
  • Intelligent architectural construction adopting natural ventilation and using window screens.
  • Use of biodegradable cleaning products.
  • Rational changing of bedding and towels, to avoid wasting water and energy.
  • Training of staff in the responsible use of resources and appropriate supervision of visitors on the trails.
  • Using organic fruits and vegetables whenever they are available.
  • Limiting the excursion groups to a maximum of eight guests per group, to reduce the impact on the trail while improving the chances of observing wildlife.
  • Offering limited accommodation with the aim of providing a rich experience for visitors while avoiding the impact of mass tourism.
  • Banning the feeding of the wildlife, in order not to affect their ability to obtain food and also to avoid making them dependent on humans.
  • Responsible management of the Cristalino reserves, through the Cristalino Foundation committee, comprising biologists, scientists and administrators.

FOREST CONSERVATION

THE PRESERVATION OF PRIMARY FOREST HAS BEEN MADE POSSIBLE BY THE BRAZIL ECO LODGE’S RESPONSIBLE TOURISM.

Our Brazil lodge directly preserves 28,167 acres (44 square miles), an area six times larger than Fernando de Noronha Archipelago or 1.3 times larger than Manhattan Island, USA.

In 2008, these efforts gained formal recognition when the lodge was honored as a winner of the Condé Nast Traveler World Savers Award (conservation), one of the world’s top sustainability awards in the hotel field.

Other recognition includes the 2012 Global Vision Award, presented by Travel + Leisure.

EDUCATION AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Human development has to occur in harmony with the sustainable use of natural resources. So, making conservation feasible in the Amazon region needs to take into consideration the needs for the population living there. Through education and the quest for sustainable economic activities, it is possible to obtain results that are favorable for human development. That is why the Eco lodge supports a variety of regional projects, such as A Day In The Forest, Young Conservationist, research and theatrical programs, through the Cristalino Foundation.

THE CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTAL SITUATION IN THE AMAZON IS, TO A LARGE EXTENT, A PROBLEM OF EDUCATION AND INFORMATION.

For this reason, the Amazon School, an educational program run by the Cristalino Foundation and supported by the lodge, invites students from schools in the area on forest immersion courses that are a blend of practical and theoretical classes about the ecosystem, using scientific methodologies, in an effort to create a positive relationship with the forest.

A DAY IN THE FOREST PROJECT

THESE ARE FREE WORKSHOPS, UNDER THE SCHOOL OF THE AMAZON PROGRAM, WHICH AIM TO PUT 11-14 YEAR-OLD CHILDREN FROM ALTA FLORESTA IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE AMAZON RAINFOREST.

During the day’s activities, the students go on walks, observe the fauna and flora, perform artistic activities and conduct group dynamics within the forest, so that it becomes a more familiar and enjoyable environment.

RESULTS TO DATE

Since 2008, more than 80 workshops have been held under the A Day In The Forest project, which have involved at least:

  • 35 undergraduate students in training workshops
  • 50 volunteers
  • 120 teachers from 30 schools (almost all state schools) in Alta Floresta and neighboring municipalities
  • 1,400 children, directly
  • Thousands of children and hundreds of adults, indirectly, through posters in schools and the Terms of Agreement signed by parents.

Tests administered before and after participation have confirmed that the workshops are effective in increasing the children’s interest and respect in relation to the forest.

Any urban or rural school in the municipalities of Alta Floresta and Novo Mundo may participate in the project. Just send an e-mail application to mariana@fundacaocristalino.org.br.

    YOUNG CONSERVATIONIST PROJECT

This is an Amazon School initiative, supported by E-Cons (Conservation Entrepreneurs Program), which aims to promote and disseminate best practices in the use and conservation of the Amazon region’s natural resources. The project involves young students, their teachers and their schools and provides acknowledgement and appreciation of their important role. The focus of the first edition of this award was the Ouro Verde State School, in a rural area of Alta Floresta, where thirty high school students participated in workshops and the development of a play aimed at environmental communication about the region. The winners went to Sao Paulo to participate in a roundtable at the Lourenço Castanho school, as well as visits aimed at environmental and scientific communication, such as the publications Super Interessante and National Geographic - both part of the Sustainable Planet section of the Editora Abril publishing house - the Globo TV network’s Globo Rural program, the Butantã Institute’s Museum of Microbiology and the Museum of Veterinary Anatomy at the University of São Paulo (USP).

    AWARDS

The School of the Amazon program has been presented with a Whitley Award, by the Whitley Fund for Nature (UK), as a model of applied environmental education.
